Ascend Performance Materials of Houston said state and local governments are providing incentives to expand its plant in Decatur and increase production of adiponitrile, a compound used to make plastics.

Initially, the $160m plant was slated to produce the compound adiponitrile, a component of nylon.

The facility owned by Shandong Runxing Chemical Technology Co. produced adiponitrile, which can give off toxic fumes when burned, according to Xinhua.

Adiponitrile is used in making nylon and other products.

The factory produced adiponitrile, a colorless liquid that releases poisonous gases when it reacts with fire.
