The alcohol content of an aqueous solution may be deduced from a determination of the specific gravity of the solution or directly by the Alcoholometer.

The amount of alcohol present in any alcoholic beverage cannot be obtained directly, but if ⅓ of the liquid be distilled and the distillate made up to the original volume, then the alcohol may be determined by the Alcoholometer.

This form of adulteration may be very easily detected by the use of strong methylic alcohol, in which the alcoholometer of Tralles or of Gay Lussac will indicate about 93��.
