Human embryos experience unusually high rates of chromosome gain and loss, known as aneuploidy, in early development.

When random mistakes occur during chromosome replication, fertilized eggs can inherit cells with these errors and result in a condition called aneuploidy, which essentially means "the wrong number of chromosomes."

The PGT-A test is used to screen for aneuploidy, which is when an improper number of chromosomes — either too few or too many — is detected in sampled cells.

Finally, aneuploidy is emerging as a possible early event driving tumour evolution12,13, but information about the frequency and types of chromosomal instability during the initial stages of tumour evolution is extremely limited.

The test also checked the samples for aneuploidy, the presence of abnormal numbers of chromosomes in cells.
