A week before Election Day 1936, when a landslide vote would keep Franklin D. Roosevelt in the White House for a second term, the antifascist play “It Can’t Happen Here” opened nationwide: 21 productions in 18 cities, from Los Angeles to New York.

RAI was in the news recently over an episode of alleged censorship when it abruptly canceled a planned monologue by an antifascist writer to air April 25, when Italy commemorates its liberation from fascist rule.

“Long live the antifascist republic!” said this year’s Liberation Day banner of the National Association of Italian Partisans.

About 100 people, including members of group called the "Antifascist co-ordination of Belgium", protested outside the Claridge venue where the conference was held on Tuesday evening.

Belgian media reported that one venue pulled out after pressure by a group called the "Antifascist coordination of Belgium".
