The book includes photographs of 515 species, including the yellow-footed, cantankerous-looking Phillipine eagle and Brazil’s chubby black-hooded antwren, a tiny bird that was rediscovered in 1987 after going unrecorded for more than a century.

The endangered birds include the black-hooded antwren, the cherry-throated tanager, the fringe-backed fire-eye and the southeastern rufous-vented ground-cuckoo.

There are three species that fall into this specialized group: helmeted pygmy-tyrant, black-headed antbird and an undescribed Herpsilochmus antwren.

It seems likely that the entire range of this antwren will be between the Putumayo and Napo Rivers on these small hills here in northeastern Peru north of the Amazon River.
