"Previous studies examining the use of light therapy focused on the testicles have often been done in men suffering from fertility issues such as azoospermia or asthenozoospermia with no indication or studies supporting its use in healthy men," Ramasamy continued.

Men with a condition called azoospermia, who cannot produce healthy sperms cells, could one day benefit from treatments based on these findings, they said.

But the risk more than tripled for those with azoospermia.

For the study, published online in the journal Fertility and Sterility, researchers evaluated 2,238 men, average age 36, at a fertility clinic in Texas; 451 had azoospermia.
