He’s an animated storyteller, delighting in remembering the band’s early days in Youngstown, Ohio, when he and his brother Ronald Khalis Bell, often credited under his Muslim name, Khalis Bayyan, pounded on empty paint cans to make rhythms.

The original seven-member lineup were brothers Robert “Kool” Bell and Ronald Bell, who later went by Khalis Bayyan, and their teenage friends Mr. Thomas, Mickens, Ricky Westfield, George Brown and Charles Smith.

A police statement issued Monday says the victim, 27-year-old Andre Jamal Bayyan of Los Angeles, was working as an Uber driver at the time of the incident.

Bayyan had been struck by gunfire while sitting inside a vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers found Andre Jamal Bayyan, fatally shot, sitting inside a vehicle, police said.
