He stressed also that there is still little known about how animals, such as beaked whales and squid, use this ecosystem.

They found Cuvier's beaked whales, bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales -- including a young adult male previously seen off southern France.

The record holder for the deepest dive by a mammal is a Cuvier's beaked whale, which in 2014 was measured to dive at least 2992 meters.

But the survey published Thursday in the Endangered Species Research journal found that at least four species of cetaceans — including sperm whales and Cuvier’s beaked whales — were present in the area all year round.
