The authority said seven key species - the adonis blue butterfly, skylark, redshank, yellow horned poppy, ringed plover, bee orchid and wigeon - were "indicators of biodiversity and landscape quality".

Its residents include the threatened Egyptian fruit bat, the bee orchid and the Eurasian Thick-knee, a dwindling species of shorebird also known as a stone-curlew.

Species include the pyramidal, fragrant and common spotted orchid, as well as the bee orchid - the flower of the county of Bedfordshire.

Brown hares, skylarks, bee orchids and gray partridges have all returned to Lark Rise Farm, in part because of the creation of five miles of new hedgerow.

It’s also the location of 6,000 acres of marsh, meadow, ponds and woods full of roe deer, bee orchids, avocet, reed buntings and other threatened species.
