More than 270 species live in the park, more than any other park in the city: bald eagles, great blue herons, osprey, red-tailed hawks, belted kingfishers, cedar waxwings and more.

The first day, a belted kingfisher slowed to pace me, flashing a bold white collar each time he swooped, impatient, between trees.

The park is a terrific spot for birdwatchers: songbirds, Barred owls, wood ducks and belted kingfishers are all regulars.
