A study published last month in Nature Plants describes shared biochemical pathways involved in vitamin B6 levels that link human neurological health and plant immunity in ways that may teach us how plant immunity works — and how to better treat neurological conditions, like epilepsy, in humans.

This study sheds light on evolution in two ways: we can see how biochemical pathways common to two entirely separate kingdoms of life, plants and animals, have been largely conserved through our long history apart.

Coviello says that with such long and intricate biochemical pathways, there’s potential in new medications that incorporate more than one receptor agonist.

In fact, the more we learn about biochemical pathways that this class of drug targets, the more it seems that we have opened the door to a dramatically improved understanding of metabolism and the many, often surprising, ways these pathways affect every aspect of our health.

"This paper reveals the detailed mechanism that tells plant cells, 'we have lots of sugar,' and then how that signaling affects the biochemical pathways that trigger processes like plant growth and oil production," said Brookhaven Lab biochemist Jantana Blanford, the study's lead author.
