Less than 6 million American households have access to curbside composting, according to research from Biocycle, an industry publication.

There were 148 curbside collection programs in jurisdictions across the country in 2017 — up from 79 in 2014 — according to BioCycle magazine.

A 2018 study by BioCycle, a publication focused on composting, found that just 50 of 103 U.S. food-waste composting facilities said they accept compostable plastics.

A bio-based liner could make the cup acceptable at municipal and industrial composting facilities, though fewer than half of the 148 curbside residential food waste collection programs surveyed by composting industry magazine BioCycle last year accept compostable plastic products.
