A Muslim aqiqah, a Jewish brit milah, a Catholic baptism — all typically involve large crowds, festive meals and useful gifts.

Some have quit their day jobs to perform the brit milah full time.

“As access is opening up to more women, they are jumping at the opportunity,” said Rabbi Julie Adler, executive director of the Brit Milah Program of Reform Judaism in Los Angeles, which trains mohels.

But that is changing, especially when it comes to the brit milah.
