Mammals that scavenge dead bird carcases, including foxes, otters and seals, have also been infected.

The Scottish government said the disease was also affecting wild bird populations elsewhere in the world, and it had published updated advice on the reporting, collection and safe disposal of wild bird carcases.

The carcases were pulled ashore and distributed to locals for consumption.

Six carcases, some with severed heads and legs, were discovered in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, near the border with Democratic Republic of Congo, on Friday.
