"Treating patients with epilepsy allows us to investigate the purpose of generating new neurons in our brains. We observe that one of reasons is to learn from the conversations we have" said co-corresponding author Michael Bonaguidi, an associate professor of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, gerontology, biochemistry and molecular medicine, biomedical engineering, and neurological surgery, and assistant director of the USC Neurorestoration Center.

"Understanding the structure of axons is important for understanding brain cell signaling," says Shigeki Watanabe, Ph.D., associate professor of cell biology and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

"The physical properties of the environment around stem cells are crucial to our health," explains Kim, Senior Scientist in the Developmental & Stem Cell Biology program.

Moore, also a professor in the Department of Cell Biology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, cautions that the study did not directly assess immune checkpoint behavior in cancer patients.

"It was a pleasure to puzzle out the findings of the study together by uniting the team's expertise in data analysis and cell biology," said Tobias Gerber, another of the study's lead authors.
