More than 3,000 women affected by the Southern Health Trust's cervical smear review are to have their previous smear slides reviewed alongside having a new smear test.

According to the Public Health Agency, the new process means women will get their results much quicker which will also help tackle the backlog of cervical smear tests.

While it is not mandatory for all cervical smear testing laboratories to be accredited, BBC News NI understands that all laboratories involved in the screening programme had been accredited prior to these sanctions being imposed.

A six-month wait for results of a cervical smear test has been described as "worrying and extremely frustrating".
