Check card offers for specifics on rewards.

Henrique Ribeiro of Takoma Park said an expired check card tied to his E-ZPass account resulted in a $2,000 debt.

The checking account features no monthly fee and lets you earn 1.5 percent on balances up to $10,000 if you meet certain requirements, like making at least 10 check card purchases a month.

Standard Group, the continent's largest bank, said some of its credit, debit and check card customers had been affected.

Issuers of prepaid cards, like Visa and American Express, say that merchants can indeed check card balances — and that restaurants often do check, when running the cards, to make sure they have enough of a balance to cover the bill plus a 20 percent tip.
