The decision came before hundreds of athletes and team officials were due to arrive in the village, which is reached by a cog railway rising toward the Jungfrau and Eiger mountains.

Work began in March 2019 on the $100 million project, which includes renovation of the cog railway’s tracks, cogs, rail cars and depots.

Festivities for the July 3 birthday of the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway are scheduled at the base station from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wayne Presby, president of the Mount Washington Railway Company, which runs the cog railway and whose property the hotel would be built, said it’s needed to meet the growing demand from tourists.

The owners of the cog railway that runs up the mountain want to build the hotel.
