According to Leicestershire Police, the complainant said it was reported Mrs Gather had a small knife, which meant they did not feel able to approach her.

Further, the court ruled that the complainant's argument that she went with Alves into the bathroom for fear that his friends might follow them did not appear reasonable.

The complainant was supported in taking the discrimination case against her former employer by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.

"A Gwent Police complaint handler spoke with the complainant where communication concerns during the investigation were discussed. The complaint was logged in line with statutory guidance," they said.

"All complainants have been provided with information summarising the decision-making process and the considerations applied."
