Hundreds of artifacts, including Confederate ammunition dumped by Union soldiers in the Civil War, were recovered during a cleanup of the Congaree River in Columbia, South Carolina.

In addition to the artifacts, other debris, including trash, scrap metal and tires, was removed from the Congaree River.

The artifacts were discovered while crews removed tar-like material from the Congaree River and bring new tangible evidence of Union Gen. William T. Sherman’s ruthless Southern campaign toward the end of the Civil War.

The PGA Championship was played on Kiawah Island and a tour event was held at Congaree Country Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina, near Hilton Head Island, in 2021.

Congaree hosted the CJ Cup in October 2022.
