convection zone
- A region of turbulent plasma between a star's core and its visible photosphere at the surface, through which energy is transferred by convection. In the convection zone, hot plasma rises, cools as it nears the surface, and falls to be heated and rise again.
Example Sentences
This boiling region is called the "convection zone," where layers and plumes of plasma roil and flow.
The convection zone comprises the top one-third of the sun's radius and stretches about 200,000 kilometers below the surface.
"People had thought that the sun's magnetic field is created by the motions at the very bottom of the convection zone."
In addition, in past years advances in helioseismology, i.e. probing the solar interior with the help of solar acoustic waves, have established that this rotational profile is nearly constant throughout the entire convection zone.
But experts agree on one thing: It probably begins in the convection zone, just below the photosphere.
