“We used a corbelling system which allows for a simple assembly of one block on top of the other,” said Oliver Wilton, director of technology at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London.

The so-called “bee-hive” cell, which goes back to pre-Christian times, was built of rough stone rubble without mortar, and roofed in the same manner by corbelling over the courses of masonry.

In shape it is a half-octagon set diagonally, and is upheld by circular corbelling.

Two courses of corbelling also appeared on the two chimneys located at the back and in the center section of the building.

This angle contains the tower staircase, which is lighted by a little window in the upper corbelling and is reached from the clearstorey gallery of the transept.
