The federal agency says the reserve is in an area that includes old homesteads and other areas previously seeded with crested wheatgrass.

In areas where the native ecosystem was already fragmented and cheatgrass was dominant, they planted a mix that included non-native crested wheatgrass and native grasses.

Like cheatgrass, crested wheatgrass comes from the Eurasian steppe; it is not native to North America.

That gives scientists a fighting chance in trying to restore native bunchgrasses, like crested wheatgrass and shrubs like sagebrush and shadscale, the bristly ground cover of most of the high deserts in the 1800s.
