It was revealed last week that kidnapping threats from the Netherlands' organised crime world had forced the crown princess to live in Spain for at least a year.

The crown princess studied in Madrid because of the security situation and enjoyed greater freedom of movement there, according to sources quoted by public broadcaster NOS.

It’s a cause that the 51-year-old Queen Mary, a mother of four, actively supported during her two decades as crown princess of Denmark.

“It’s horrible that this is necessary, first and foremost for the crown princess,” Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius, the Dutch minister of justice and safety, wrote on Twitter.

The crown princess has a foundation focused on countering bullying and promoting well-being among the young.
