It is a dictionary catalogue, on cards, in which the books are entered by author, by subject, and by title, when the title is distinctive.

One objection brought against the dictionary catalogue is that it widely separates subjects that belong together.

Thus he finds that there is no key which so quickly unlocks the stores of knowledge which a library contains, as a dictionary catalogue.
