A 2021 report from Barna Group revealed that white practicing Christians remained unlikely to recognize past or continuing racial discrimination, cross-racial relationships continued surface level and Black congregants experienced racial slights in these multiracial spaces.

While the country has passed trans-inclusive legislation and recognised in law a "third gender", stigma and discrimination remain.

The law, which takes effect July 1, opens trans and gender expansive Iowans up to discrimination in housing, employment, education and public services.
