Downing Street has rejected suggestions by the foreign secretary that the latest wave of US tariffs marks the return of a new era of "protectionism".

The last time Figen Murray came to Downing Street, the famous black door to Number 10 Downing Street stayed firmly shut.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told business chiefs in Downing Street that "clearly there will be an economic impact" from Trump's tariffs - but the government will respond with "cool and calm heads".

A Downing Street source said the UK's lower tariff "vindicates" the government's plans, because "the difference between 10% and 20% is thousands of jobs".
