The city has identified 10 acres in northwest Detroit for ecological, agricultural, energy, crop or other uses.

The city said in a statement another part will include a plan to transform vacant lots “into productive landscapes that can include innovative ecological, agricultural, energy, crop and other uses.”

Last year a commercial scale advanced biofuels plant was opened in Crescentino near Turin, with the aim of producing 75 million litres of bioethanol every year from straw and arundo donax, an energy crop grown on marginal land.

Some scientists see great potential in these trees as a biomass energy crop.

So better to use it for energy, and the sheer volume of it makes it worthwhile as an energy crop.
