After a botched fireworks detonation in 2021 that the city had to settle for more than $21 million, authorities took no chances with the situation in Pacoima on Friday and evacuated the surrounding area.

Explosive materials, possibly used in an illegal homemade fireworks operation, were discovered in a Pacoima home that exploded Thursday, critically injuring one man and displacing several families, police said Friday.

The explosion was initially believed to have been caused by fireworks, according to the alert.

As the fireworks crackled, the tinsel fell and the lap of honour snaked around the vast stadium, it felt like the beginning of something.

"They had live singers, a paint party and fireworks. It was my favourite time to be at the park."
