In 2011, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Beech and Foster ran a pipe into the mosque from a nearby gas meter in a bid to spark an explosion.

Residents whose service has been turned off should not attempt to restore service themselves or connect alternative fuels like propane to their natural gas meters, because it is dangerous.

The fire was set along a wall at the optometry center near a row of gas meters.

The cause of the leak is still being investigated, but Fire Chief John Donnelly said he believes it "happened after a vehicle struck the gas meter".

"I've been that man that has to put five quid in the gas meter on a Sunday night and been watching the meter spin round all week," he told TalkTV in 2022.
