From several types of frogs and a Madagascan dragonfly, to a ghost shrimp and prehistoric sea creature, the list is impressive.

Researchers say a small group of gray whales that stops in Puget Sound on their annual migration, known as “the Sounders,” have been known to teach themselves how to feed on ghost shrimp burrowed in mud flats, often in shallow near-shore waters.

In the summer, the Salish Sea shorelines teem with spawning herring, drawing humpback leviathans; gray whales swim right up to the beach to suck ghost shrimp out of the mud; and the return of chinook salmon brings home our three native pods of southern resident orcas.

She looks more like the ghost shrimp I saw once at the Albuquerque aquarium.

Just like the ghost shrimp in the tank, she’s both beautiful...and horrifying, her veins glowing red and blue under pale skin.
