Two golden lion tamarin twins and a critically endangered gentle lemur are among the latest newborns at the central London attraction.

A 10-month-old white-faced saki monkey called Fia and two eight-month-old golden lion tamarin primates, male Pomelo and female Clementine, have all been named by zookeepers recently.

“One of the biggest problems is the fragmentation of the forest,” said Luís Paulo Ferraz, executive director of the Golden Lion Tamarin Association, known by its Portuguese acronym AMLD.

Once on the brink of extinction, with only about 200 animals in the wild, the population has rebounded to around 4,800, according to a study released Tuesday by the Brazilian science and conservation nonprofit Golden Lion Tamarin Association.

Researchers went to specific locations and checked whether monkeys responded to recordings of the tamarins’ long call, which basically means “I’m here. Are you there?” said James Dietz, a biologist and president of the U.S.-based nonprofit Save the Golden Lion Tamarin.
