But there was nothing abstemious about the performance, and instances of folk-music-like rhythmic quickening, as in the end of “The Great Doxology,” were rendered with exuberance and style.

The great doxology of the first half of the chapter is intensely theological; and the prayer which follows it, like that of the letter to the Colossians, melts into doctrine imperceptibly.

The evolution of the Great Doxology from the words of the angelic song, Glory to God in the highest, to the Gloria in excelsis illustrates the expanding thought of the Church, corresponding to the growth of the Christian body within the culture of the Roman Empire.

After the alternate prayer, composed in 1549, comes the ancient hymn known as the "Gloria in Excelsis," or "Angelic Hymn," or the "Great Doxology."

Now what strikes me as singular about this great doxology is the characteristics, or, to use a technical word, the attributes, of the divine nature which the Apostle selects.
