County health officials are warning that some diners at a Monterey Park restaurant may have been exposed to hepatitis A.

Even though an excellent vaccine has been available since the 1990s, there have been 45,000 confirmed cases of hepatitis A, leading to 424 deaths in the United States, since 2016.

The state's health department has warned residents that flood water may mix with sewage, leading to the transmission of diseases like leptospirosis and hepatitis A.

“Receiving vaccination as soon as possible after exposure could help reduce the risk of developing hepatitis A infection,” the county Public Health Department said in a statement.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating an outbreak of the highly contagious liver disease hepatitis A among its homeless population.
