The researchers published their findings on May, 11, 2024 in the journal Hepatology.

The current study, published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, compared three treatments: two dietary and one based on use of medications.

Eliseo Castillo, PhD, an associate professor in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology in the UNM School of Medicine's Department of Internal Medicine and an expert in mucosal immunology, is leading the charge at UNM on microplastic research.

"The results of this study could change clinical practice," said Yee Hui Yeo, MD, first author of the study and a clinical fellow in the Karsh Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Cedars-Sinai.

Additional co-authors were Aadra P. Bhatt, a professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology; and Matthew R. Redinbo, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics, both at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
