WASP-43 b is a "hot Jupiter" type of exoplanet: similar in size to Jupiter, made primarily of hydrogen and helium, and much hotter than any of the giant planets in our own solar system.

That makes it what astronomers call a Hot Jupiter, a common type of exoplanet.

Silicates are exceptionally common — all the rocky bodies in the solar system are made from them, and silicates have previously been detected in the atmospheres of hot Jupiter exoplanets before.

The plot, or spectrum, reveals detailed information about the atmosphere of the exoplanet WASP-39b, called a ‘hot Jupiter’ by scientists because it is slightly wider in diameter than Jupiter but orbits its star much more closely than Mercury orbits the Sun, making it unbearably hot.
