Smith has received immunotherapy treatment for a rare form of lung cancer called pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, which he said had helped shrink his tumours significantly.

He is due to undergo a year of immunotherapy, a treatment that boosts the body's own immune system to fight the disease.

However, researchers are studying a treatment called oral immunotherapy, which may help some people with food allergies become less sensitive to certain foods.

There, the mother of three met with patients being treated with chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

"We are hopeful that we will be able to use this new immunotherapy instead of chemotherapy, or at least dramatically reduce the need for chemotherapy, for all types of breast cancer," Czerniecki said.
