The brick museum, tucked in a park in the Central Valley city, includes works by well-known painters like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, George Inness and William Keith, as well as a California history collection that displays Native American art and artifacts from the gold rush and the dawn of agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley.

Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in England, attributed the storms to an unusually strong jet stream over the eastern Atlantic Ocean, with winds close to 200 mph at high altitudes.

“A strong jet stream like this can act like a production line for storms, generating a new storm every day or two,” Inness said.

He hopes that Inness will eventually start to feel like a stylish update on a Catskills family resort from the 1960s.

As the sun descended over Inness that Saturday, Mr. Somer was taking in the golden-hour view of the grounds from a flax-colored armchair in the Inness lounge, discussing the Danish sensibility of its lime-wash walls and the utilitarian design of the building itself, which he described as a “a wormhole between an old 17th-century Dutch barn and a brand-new Swiss minimalist museum.”
