College principals and the chair of the Student Union welcomed Mr Tao when he reached Josephine Butler College on 26 September.

“OK, this is a $19 strawberry from Erewhon, so we’re gonna eat it,” influencer Alyssa Antoci, who is the niece of Erewhon’s owners, Tony and Josephine Antoci, said in a viral video posted on Feb. 22.

Josephine Rios, a nursing assistant who has worked at Kaiser Permanente in Orange County for seven years, said she attended the protest on behalf of her 7-year-old grandson, Elijah, who has cerebral palsy.

As with others at Tuesday’s protest, the issue was personal for Josephine Rios.
