Thus, we have kālī or kārī, black; phar or phal, fruit; Skr. rajju-, B. leju-rī a string; Lakhnaur, the name of a town, quite commonly pronounced Nakhlaul; and the English names Kelly and Currie both pronounced indifferently karī or kalī.

The popular belief is that in a dispute between him and his wife, Pārvatī, alias �����ī, she cursed the person that should thenceforward dare to drink of the water that flowed over his images on earth.

Seeing him, �����ī Mā, said that she was so hungry that she must eat him, though she had intended to eat the people in the palace.

Afterwards gaining admission to the palace �����ī Mā ate up everyone in it except the Rājā’s daughter.

One night the goddess �����ī came to the Rājā’s palace and knocked at the gate: but no one would come to open it.
