But the lungi - or lungyi, longyi, sarong etc - has now found its way on to the High Street.

She is standing behind a table stacked high with blue jeans; most of the milling crowd is dressed in lungyis, Myanmar’s skirt-like national dress.

"The buses are cheap, but hot. Taxis are cool, but expensive," says the 36-year-old, who wears a crisp white shirt along with his lungyi.

The latter proved to be a languid person with a blue lungyi twisted about his hips.

Scattered through the fields are the harvesters, whose brightly-coloured "lungyi" and gay head-scarf are the only spots of definite colour.
