"The maritime pine is a champion in all categories in terms of wood production, and even adaptation to the environment we have, with the strong variations in drought, the very draining soils," explained ONF agent Carnir.

"Maritime pine used to make 70% of our production four or five years ago, now it's only 45%," Bonedeau said.

To assemble the data set, research teams looked at about 20 trees from each of the dozen tree species, which included maritime pine, Norway spruce, sessile oak, stone pine, and European beech.

On my last day, I drove the winding roads through the Landes du Médoc — the largest maritime pine forest in Europe — until it emptied out onto the Atlantic coast.

The invasive trees are Monterey pine, Mexican weeping pine and maritime pine.
