David Nash died in November 2020 after developing mastoiditis in his ear, which caused an abscess on his brain.

Andrew Nash, 56, said: "The mastoiditis is readily treatable with modern antibiotics and it should never have been left to get to the stage where it caused the complication of a brain abscess."

He took the decision as son Alfie, seven, was shielding after surgery to remove growths on his brain caused by mastoiditis.

“But there are some awful sick kids. The Ransel kids have all developed mastoiditis.”

When he was 5, a chronic ear infection led to mastoiditis, an infection of the skull bone behind the ear, according to a 2010 story in the magazine Deaf Life.
