Regional environmental protection authorities in Wroclaw said that Oder water samples taken on July 28 showed an 80% probability that they contained mesitylene, a toxic substance, although this wasn't present in samples taken after Aug. 1.

Swift Fuels, based in West Lafayette, Indiana, has developed an unleaded avgas by blending isopentane, a chemical found in mouthwash, with mesitylene, an industrial solvent.

The first portion of the distillate consists of a small amount of water and mesitylene and is added to the combined second distillates.

Upon cooling, mesitylene sulfonic acid crystallizes and the unsulfonated material remains as an oil on the surface.

The reaction mixture is now steam distilled, the mesitylene separated, dried over calcium chloride and fractionated; the portion which boils at 163-167'0 is collected.
