At 30 centimeters tall and 100 grams, the rainbow lorikeet towers over most nectarivorous birds and is utterly incapable of hovering in midair like a hummingbird.

However, the Messel avifauna includes many extinct groups without close living relatives or with unknown affinities, such as the long-legged and flightless Palaeotis weigelti, the aptly named Perplexicervix microcephalon, and the small, presumably nectarivorous, Pumiliornis.

Nectarivorous bats have tongues adapted to obtain nectar from flowers, but the orange-nectar bat has evolved its own special technique.
