Dani's story - of a disabled person struggling to access the same available healthcare as non-disabled people - is not an unfamiliar one.

Over and over, as I spoke with the subjects in my book, I heard stories of people having to fight for the right to mainstream education, people who literally had to sue their schools for the same educational opportunities as their non-disabled friends and peers.

"It's all of these little things that kind of add on to your day and something that, for a non-disabled person would take like 30 seconds, for me sometimes it could take you know half an hour," she added.

“When these jokes are being made by non-disabled strangers with a punchline of not being able to walk, it very much feels like laughing at rather than laughing with,” she said.

Despite this, he refused to give up on his racing career, lobbying to allow both disabled and non-disabled drivers to race alongside each other.
