More vegetation along the wetlands means better nesting for mallards, northern harrier hawks and other species.

Wildlife officials say burns in pine-oak barrens, woodlands, and heaths improve habitat for ruffed grouse, wild turkey, American woodcock, white-tailed deer and rare and declining species such as whip-poor-will, northern harrier, and eastern meadowlark.

He pointed out the different species of birds — a northern harrier and an American kestrel, among them — that called out and swooped through the air as evidence of that evolution.

These include the Baltimore oriole, American kestrel, northern harrier and ring-billed gull.

While the ducks showed a preference for the water, a juvenile bald eagle and a northern harrier hawk alternated between flying over the wetlands and perching atop nearby trees.
