“People are frustrated,” said the retired agricultural nurseryman, who’s the chief petitioner for the initiative drives.

“The hummers will love you. Your nurseryman will love you. Sometimes your spouse will even love you,” he says.

The institute was named after the French nurseryman who first brought the trees and vines planted at stagecoach stops and homesteads throughout the California foothills in the late 1800s.

“The same concept is going on all around the country,” said Keith Warren, a prominent tree breeder, nurseryman and author.

Perhaps the confusion is best avoided by following the advice of Virginia herb nurseryman Francesco DeBaggio, who writes that, for culinary use, the Italian oregano, Origanum x majoricum, “is the best all-purpose oregano.”
