During my stay, we followed the Benedictine motto “Ora et labora,” pray and work.

The Acton Institute’s Dylan Pahman flags a new report by the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America which reminds us that monks are also businessmen: Saint Benedict’s motto was “Ora et Labora”–”Pray and Work”, and those monastic communities do have to get funded somehow.

In the Christian ora et labora ora plays the rôle of pleasure.

Ora et Labora, pray and work, was the motto which Benedict, who revolutionized the social conditions of Europe by bringing back the dignity of labor and lifting men's minds out of the rut of the cult of their bodies, into which they had fallen at the close of the Roman Empire, gave to the members of his order.
