Inspector General André Vladimir Paraison said the president called him at 1:46 a.m. and said, “Paraison! Man, hurry up! I’m in trouble! Come quickly and save my life.”

Edwin Paraison, a former Haitian diplomat and executive director of a foundation that seeks to strengthen ties between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, said he would be surprised if international leaders didn’t have a plan B.

Paraison noted that more than 600 soldiers who recently received training in Mexico could work alongside with police.

Paraison has seen large-scale deportations before, in the nineteen-nineties, when hundreds of Haitian immigrants and some Dominicans of Haitian descent were simply picked up and dumped at the border by Dominican authorities without being allowed to collect their belongings or notify their families.

A few weeks ago, at a Haitian-American community meeting in Miami, Edwin Paraison, the former minister to Haitians living abroad, warned that the deportations can quickly dissolve into an urgent humanitarian crisis.
